North East Scotland

The North East of Scotland consists of rich farmlands, mountains and a varied coastline of unspoilt beaches, rocky shores and historic harbours.  For the visitor there are many sights to see and places to visit.  There are many castles in this area, the earliest built as mighty fortifications and often the scene of bloody battles. Later castles were built as imposing homes to show their owners wealth and status.

The Moray Firth coast of North East Scotland is magical place during the Summer months.  Lying between 57 and 58 degrees North the sun does not set until the late hours.  The gentle light and peaceful (well most times!) oceans provide an ideal location for long seashore walks.

North East Scotland is also the heart of the whisky industry.  The valley of the River Spey in particular is where a large number of distilleries are to be found. A tour among selected distilleries provides both an insight into production methods, and inevitably, sampling of the product itself.

This area was once the home of a thriving fishing industry. Every town and most villages boasted a harbour of sorts.  The fishing industry remains in major centres such as Fraserburgh, Peterhead, MacDuff and Buckie.  The many smaller harbours near villages such as Gardenstown (left) are now used for leisure purposes.

In villages or towns such as Gardenstown, Pennan or Portsoy the architecture and layout remains that of the times when the flourishing fishing industry founded these places.  Well worth a visit.
