Aberdeen and Scotland

Scotland

The Oceans'07 Aberdeen conference offers the opportunity to attend a high quality scientific event. You may wish to extend your visit to Scotland by experiencing a vacation in some of the most beautiful landscapes and seascapes on the planet. The timing of the conference in mid-June gives the opportunity to spend a week's vacation or more in North East Scotland with its many castles and golf courses, or to spend time on one of the West Coast islands, such as Mull, Arran or Skye, or any other location in this beautiful country.

A popular vacation style in this area is that of a rented cottage (you'll need a hire car too). The vast majority of such cottages can be organised via the internet, try searching with "holiday cottage scotland", or for a specific island "holiday cottage Mull". If you choose to go to one of the islands you'll also need to book a ferry, see Calmac.

Scotland is famed for the beauty of its landscapes, and of course, seascapes.  The West Coast of Scotland provides the best of such landscapes and seascapes.  The many hundreds of islands lying to the West of the country range in size from the larger through to many smaller islands each with its own distinct character.

The City of Glasgow is well worth visiting. The architecture in the older heart of the city is outstanding, with a wealth of museums and galleries. A particular favourite among those with an interest in the sea is the the Transport Museum and the Clyde Room. In this room you can see a superb collection of some 250 ship models. These models of new vessels were constructed by the many shipyards active on the River Clyde. Nearby is the recently refurbished Kelvingrove Museum. For information on Glasgow's museums see http://www.glasgowmuseums.com. The link to the left shows the Clyde Room.
The image to the right shows an arm of a sea loch on the West coast.  There are more than fish to be found in these waters!
The City of Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland.  It is a favourite tourist spot for good reason.  The centre of the city is dominated by Edinburgh castle.
